A Dive into
Kristiansund

Kristiansund, Norway

Beneth the surface at the
Nordic Light Festival

This project was created for Nordic Light International Festival of Photography in Kristiansund and developed as an artistic exploration of the city's identity, history, and connection to the sea. Constructed from discarded materials collected throughout the city and its harbour basin, the work transformed overlooked objects into a visual narrative rooted in place, memory, and local character.

The project was shaped by a process of discovery, uncovering stories through the materials themselves. By collecting fragments from streets, industrial areas, waterfronts, and the harbour, the work revealed traces of everyday life, maritime traditions, and the evolving relationship between people and their environment. The collection process was made possible through collaboration with Antisink Systems and Kristiansund Dykkerklubb, whose local knowledge and support provided access to materials and perspectives that became central to the final work. Each material carried its own history, becoming both a physical component of the artwork and a reflection of the city from which it came.

An important part of the process was engaging with the people of Kristiansund. Conversations with local residents, historians, and festival volunteers provided valuable insight into the city's culture, traditions, and strong sense of community. These encounters enriched the project and helped establish a deeper connection between the artwork and the place it was created for.

The finished piece became a tribute to Kristiansund. A city shaped by both land and sea, history and renewal. Through the use of locally sourced materials and stories gathered along the way, the project sought to celebrate the character of the city while encouraging a new perspective on the value and potential hidden within overlooked objects.
